What is Delta 10 THC? How Is It Different From Others?

A “new” phytocannabinoid has made its way into the news recently: delta 10 THC. This isomer is one of the most famous delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) looks and acts similarly to other types of THC, though research stays limited.

In this post, you will find: what is delta 10? How does Delta 10 THC differ from various other types of THC?

What is Delta 10 THC?

Delta 10 THC is an “accidental” cannabinoid found in 2020 when marijuana plants were exposed to a fire retardant chemical, triggering a chain reaction that produced delta 10 THC. Lab analysts wrapped up that delta 10 THC is a synthetic cannabinoid, the fire-resistant catalyst that created the response. And though delta 10 THC was first incorrect as Cannabichromene (CBC), it is a different substance making its way to store shelves.

Delta 10 THC reportedly provides comparable yet less extreme drowsiness than delta 9 THC. However, just like its relative delta 8 THC, delta 10 can be manufactured from federally-legal hemp plants, where manufacturers convert delta 10 from cannabidiol (CBD) with an isomerization process. This conversion is not considered natural and produces a legal gray area for this new plant-derived cannabinoid.

What is known about Delta 10 THC so far?

Research into delta 10 THC stays limited because of its recent exploration. What we know about delta 10 THC, we mainly infer from various other isomers. For example, one theory assumes that delta 10 THC is likely a CB1 receptor agonist, interacting with the endogenous cannabinoid system (ECS) in a similar method as delta 9 THC and delta 8 THC.

Much of what is known about the effects of delta 10 THC comes from unscientific stories. Users report similar intoxication as delta 9 THC but less potent, similar to delta 8 THC. Considering that no preliminary pet research or medical tests have been done on delta 10 THC.

Delta 10 THC legality

The 2018 Farm Bill legalized the domestic cultivation and processing of hemp, which extractors are using to generate delta 10 THC from a hemp-derived extract. This is because delta 10 THC can be developed using CBD– no delta 9 THC is called for whatsoever. A similar dilemma is facing regulators around delta 8 THC, which several states have preemptively transferred to prohibit.

Delta 10 vs. Delta 8 and Delta 9 THC

The biggest difference to know about delta 10 THC is that it is a synthetic cannabinoid developed by way of a catalyst. Delta 9 THC is abundant in many cannabis plants, while delta 8 THC can naturally be found in small amounts. Delta 10 THC, though, does not appear to be based on its very own.

To get beyond that, it is necessary to understand the chemical make-up of these substances and what is meant by the “delta” numbers. As isomers of delta 9 THC, delta 10, and delta 8 THC are similar in chemical substance structure. The major difference is the place of a double bond around the THC molecule.
